Legal
Copyright and
sharing
The rules for sharing songs in Alani, how to report a song, and what happens next. Last updated 22 October 2026.
This page is a draft that is waiting for a legal review. It describes how we handle copyright reports today.
Sharing songs
- A song you upload is private. You can share it with your friends, or with everyone using Alani (the Community pool).
- The first time you share a song with everyone, you confirm that you own it or have the right to share it. We keep that confirmation, with its time.
- Only share music you made or have the right to share. You are responsible for what you share.
Report a song
- In Alani: open the menu of a song someone shared and choose Report this song.
- If you own the rights (or act for the owner): send a notice with the notice form. You do not need an account. Tell us which work is yours, which song it is (the song's name and the username of the person who shared it help us find it) and sign the two statements.
- We read every report. Please do not send a report you know is false: a false notice can have legal consequences.
What we do
- A person looks at the report. If the song should not be shared, we take it down: nobody can play it, it becomes private, and its owner is told why.
- If we decide no action is needed, the report is closed and the person who sent it is told.
- Every step is kept with who decided and when.
If your song was taken down
- You are told what happened and the report's reference. If you think it was a mistake, send a counter-notice from My songs in Alani: say why you may share the song and sign with your name.
- We then wait 10 business days before we look at it, and we tell you the date. If the song is restored, you can play it again (it stays private until you share it again) and the strike is removed.
- We may decide the song stays down, and we tell you why.
Repeat reports
- Each song that is taken down is a strike against its owner. A strike counts for a year, or until the song is restored.
- At two strikes, sharing with everyone is switched off for 30 days. At three strikes in a year, sharing is switched off for the account, and we may suspend it.
- We may also close the Community pool, or part of it, at any time.
